As you can read on the spywareinfo.com Weekly Newsletter, John Gotts formally apologized for upsetting us about the Spybot name. And the spybot.com website has been fixed, and now makes clear that it is not associated with Spybot-S&D. As far as this goes, I accept the apology of Mr. Gotts. Mr. Howard R. Goff has also finally contacted me and explained the situation from his standpoint. I'm not sure why the website that was fixed yesterday shows a 404 (page not found) error today, but I guess it is because he is unsure what to do about the page at this moment. Quoting Mr. Goff on SpywareInfo: "I give you my word that I will abandon this trademark as soon as it gets far enough along in the application process that I can." Mike Healan verified that the IP of that post matches one from an email sent by Mr. Goff, so it has been confirmed that this is really originating from him. And even though a post on a message board is not legally binding, I think he won't object to sending the same thing in written as well, so everything should be solved within a few days. At this point I want to thank the everyone for participating in this "battle" (especially to those who mailed me with a lot of useful advice), as well as Mr. Gotts and Mr. Goff for their cooperation (even though it took a lot of persuasion from the public ;) ). |
